What about Panchgani?

Panchgani, near Pune, is western India's best-known boarding town, with schools such as St. Peter's, Kimmins, Billimoria and New Era. Many Mumbai families consider it alongside the boarding schools in Mumbai's region, as it's roughly five to six hours by road.

Fees at boarding schools in Mumbai

Fees range from about ₹85,000 to ₹14,00,000 a year. Kohinoor American and Cathedral Vidya are at the top, while Rosary, Vagad Pace and Ram Ratna are more moderate. At day-cum-boarding schools, the boarding fee is well above the day fee.

Questions to ask boarding schools in Mumbai's region

How many students does each house parent look after, and who is on duty at night?
What is the anti-ragging and anti-bullying policy?
How does the school handle the monsoon for boarders?
How often can parents visit?

What's the right age to start?

Many school guides suggest children aged about 8 to 13 adjust most easily to boarding, though readiness matters more than age. Ask each school from which class it takes boarders and how it supports younger children.

Weekends and visits

Schools publish leave weekends and visiting days in advance. Being close to Mumbai makes these easier to manage, and at some schools weekly boarding is possible.

Medical care

Ask about the infirmary, nursing staff and doctor on call, and which hospital the school uses in an emergency, especially at campuses in the hills. Boarding schools in Mumbai's wider region vary in how close they are to major hospitals.

Preparing your child

Visit together in term time and see the boarding house
Practise independence at home: packing, routines and laundry
Agree on how you'll keep in touch within the school's rules
Consider weekly boarding as a first step, where offered

Scholarships

Some schools offer merit or need-based scholarships and sibling concessions. Ask each admissions office what's available, the criteria and the deadlines, which can fall before the main admission dates.

Talking to current boarding parents is often the most honest guide to how a school really works.

And finally, involve your child in the decision. Children who have visited the school and feel they've had a say usually settle into boarding more quickly and happily.

Travel at the start and end of term

Ask whether the school arranges escorted travel or pick-ups from Mumbai, and what it costs. For schools in the hills, allow extra time during the monsoon, when roads through the ghats can slow down.

How we put this list together

This list covers private schools in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and the wider region, including boarding schools in Lonavala, Khandala and Deolali that many Mumbai families consider. We include schools based on board affiliation, standing, facilities and the options parents ask about most. Fees are indicative annual figures from school websites and published listings; they change every year and often exclude one-time charges, so confirm the latest figure with each school. Last updated: September 2026.
