If you're searching for international schools in Shimla, the honest answer is that the choice is very limited. On our list, only Bishop Cotton School offers an international curriculum, through an optional Cambridge IGCSE pathway from Class 9. Several other schools use "International" in their names, but follow CBSE.

International schools in Shimla at a glance

Bishop Cotton School: ICSE and ISC, with an optional Cambridge IGCSE pathway from Class 9
Boys only, fully residential
Indicative fees: about ₹10,55,000 to ₹10,95,000 a year

Bishop Cotton's Cambridge pathway

Founded in 1859, Bishop Cotton follows ICSE and ISC and has added the Cambridge IGCSE as an option from Class 9. The school describes it as a pathway to global readiness, giving boys an international qualification alongside a school rooted in Indian traditions.

Why names can mislead

Himalayan International, Ivy International and JMK International all follow CBSE on our list. They may be good schools, but they aren't international schools in the curriculum sense. Always check which exams students actually sit.

Looking further afield

For IB or a wider Cambridge offering, families usually look beyond Shimla. Dehradun has The Doon School (IB Diploma) and several Cambridge schools, and Mussoorie has Woodstock (IB) and Mussoorie International (IB and Cambridge). Pathways World School near Delhi is another IB boarding option.

IB or Cambridge?

IB: broad and inquiry-led, with six subjects, a research essay and service in the Diploma
Cambridge: IGCSE and A Levels, with more subject choice

Indian universities accept both through equivalence set by the Association of Indian Universities.

Life in the hills

Bishop Cotton has been managing Shimla's cold, snowy winters since the 1860s. Ask about its term calendar, heating and winter uniform.

A note on this page

Because only one school on our Shimla list offers an international curriculum, this page also points you to nearby alternatives. We'll add international schools in Shimla if more meet our criteria.

Is one school enough choice?

For many families, Bishop Cotton's mix of ICSE, ISC and an optional Cambridge pathway is exactly right. If you need a full IB programme or a co-ed international school, you'll need to look beyond international schools in Shimla, most likely to Dehradun or Mussoorie.

What to ask

Which subjects are offered on the Cambridge pathway?
Can students switch between ICSE and IGCSE?
How does the school support university applications abroad?
What does the fee include?

Checking programmes

Cambridge lists its registered centres and the IB publishes a directory of authorised schools, so it's easy to check any school's international status.

If more international schools in Shimla meet our criteria, we'll add them here.

Boarding at Bishop Cotton

Bishop Cotton is fully residential. Younger boys live in dormitories under matrons, and older boys in houses, with teachers resident on campus.

Comparing with other international schools

If you're comparing international schools in Shimla with those in Dehradun and Mussoorie, look at the curriculum on offer, whether the school is single-sex or co-ed, and the full boarding cost.

Planning ahead

Bishop Cotton's places are limited, so register early and ask how students choose between ICSE and the Cambridge pathway at Class 9. Families looking at international schools in Shimla should start the process at least a year ahead.

University counselling

Ask how Bishop Cotton supports university applications in India and abroad, how early counselling starts, and where recent graduates have gone.

Fees and extras

Ask whether the Cambridge pathway is priced differently from ICSE, and what the boarding fee includes. Uniforms, travel and trips are often extra.

For now, Bishop Cotton is the only option among international schools in Shimla on our list, so visiting it alongside one or two alternatives elsewhere makes sense.

Finally, visit in term time if you can; seeing lessons and boarding life in action tells you far more than any brochure.

Parent communication

Ask how the school reports progress, how often parents can visit and who your first contact will be. For a boarding school, clear communication is especially important.

And if an international curriculum is essential, consider visiting Dehradun or Mussoorie on the same trip, so you can compare options side by side.

How we put this list together

This list covers private schools in Shimla and the surrounding hills, including Sanawar, Dharampur, Chharabra, Kotkhai and Nauni. We include schools based on board affiliation, standing, facilities and the options parents ask about most. Fees are indicative annual figures from school websites and published listings; they change every year, so confirm the latest figure with each school. Last updated: September 2026.
